TESTAMENTS

Rediscovering Ceramics
Testaments emerged as I delved deeper into ceramics, moving beyond my Bachelor’s projects, Book of Secrets and Via Seca Via Umida, which I showcased in my final exhibition. This series was an exciting progression in my ceramic journey, one that continued into a post-graduate ceramics class and volunteer work at a local studio. My passion for ceramics grew with each new insight into the properties of clay, glazing formulas, and surface creation. These experiences cultivated a foundation that allowed me to approach ceramics with curiosity and innovation, setting the stage for Testaments.
Exploring Hidden Knowledge and Narrative
The concept of hidden knowledge captivated me—how much must we reveal to tell a story, to suggest an idea, without fully disclosing it? Inspired by ancient scrolls and, later, the enigmatic Dead Sea Scrolls, I considered the fragility of recorded wisdom. How much valuable information has been lost simply because the materials that held it have faded away? This idea led me to experiment with creating delicate clay surfaces, using gauze and layers of clay so thin they became almost transparent. Finding just the right thickness was an art in itself, requiring several attempts to reach a balance between fragility and functionality, creating a surface that could hold a painted narrative.
Figures of Reverence and Dormancy
As I worked with the clay, images naturally emerged. The figures took form in poses of seated and reclining authority, almost imperial in their presence—gestures of regality and reverence reminiscent of glorified beings awaiting rediscovery. There’s a duality in these figures, as they simultaneously evoke both grandeur and slumber, suggesting a dormant wisdom that lies in waiting, ready to be uncovered and understood.
